A Florida family used credit card rewards to save more than $6,500 on a multigenerational trip to Italy. The vacation included four adults and an infant traveling from Orlando to London, then Venice, and finally returning home from Naples.

Gabrielle Bernardini explained that her parents had always considered international travel too expensive. However, after she introduced them to using points and miles, they were able to plan a long-desired visit to Italy. "It's not necessarily that they don't want to travel; it's just that they have always equated traveling — particularly flying outside of the U.S. — with being too far outside their financial means," Bernardini said.

The first leg of the journey was booked through Virgin Atlantic Flying Club after Chase Ultimate Rewards offered a 40% transfer bonus. Bernardini transferred 23,000 Chase points, which became 32,200 Virgin points after the bonus. She redeemed 30,000 Flying Club points plus about $73 per person in taxes and fees for nonstop flights from Orlando International Airport (MCO) to London's Heathrow Airport (LHR). Adding her infant as a lap child cost an additional 1,000 points and around $5 in fees.

"If I were to have paid cash for four adults and one baby to travel from MCO to LHR, I would have spent around $2,300," Bernardini said. "Since I only had to transfer 23,000 Chase points (to redeem 31,000 Virgin points), I got about 8.7 cents per point in value." She noted this exceeded the August 2025 TPG valuations of both Chase Ultimate Rewards and Flying Club points.

For the flight from London to Venice Marco Polo Airport (VCE), Bernardini transferred another 20,000 Chase points for British Airways Avios redemptions: four adult tickets for 19,065 Avios plus $251 in taxes and fees total. Her son’s lap infant fare was about $50 more. "Therefore, I saved a little over $700 for these flights to Italy," she said.

The return flight from Naples International Airport (NAP) back home via Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) was booked using American Airlines AAdvantage miles earned through two different credit cards: the AAdvantage Aviator Red World Elite Mastercard and Citi / AAdvantage Platinum Select World Elite Mastercard. "Since this flight was not even available on partner airlines, I was at the mercy of American Airlines' dynamic pricing," Bernardini stated.

She booked her own ticket for 38,000 miles plus $43; her parents used their miles for three other seats at an earlier lower rate of 27,500 each plus taxes and fees. The lap infant charge added up to approximately $119 more on her reservation. In total: "Combined, for four adults and one baby... we redeemed 120,500 American miles and spent about $290 in taxes [and] fees... If we had paid cash... we would have spent almost $3,600."

Bernardini emphasized how rewards programs made such travel possible: "Without the use of flexible credit card reward currencies...I would not have been able to take a memorable multigenerational vacation with my family." She concluded that saving over $6,500 on airfare allowed them more freedom with other expenses during their trip.
