Lufthansa has taken delivery of its first Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner equipped with the new Allegris cabin. This marks a step in the airline’s ongoing fleet modernization efforts. While Lufthansa already operates several 787s, this is the first to feature the Allegris interior, as earlier aircraft were originally intended for Hainan Airlines and retain their original layouts.

The rollout of the Allegris program has faced significant challenges since its announcement in 2017. Initially set to debut on the Boeing 777X in 2020, delays related to product development and supply chain issues pushed its introduction to 2024. At present, Allegris is only available on select Airbus A350 routes from Munich, making the 787-9 the second aircraft type in Lufthansa’s fleet to offer these updated cabins.

According to Planespotters.net data, the newly delivered 787-9, registered D-ABPF, completed its first flight in June 2024 but remained in storage for over a year due to certification delays with the business class seats. The design of these seats matches those on Lufthansa’s A350-900s; however, they are produced by different manufacturers and require separate certification processes for each seat type. As a result, multiple Dreamliners have been stored while awaiting approval.

Currently, only the front row of business class seats on this new aircraft is certified and available for sale. Lufthansa plans to use these planes initially on short-haul routes and aims for full certification of all Allegris seats on the 787 by year-end.

Allegris represents a comprehensive overhaul across all cabin classes—first, business, premium economy, and economy. While business class receives notable updates such as five distinct seat types (including suites with sliding doors), every section features new seating arrangements. Future deliveries of both Airbus A350-900s and Boeing 787-9s will include Allegris cabins.

Lufthansa has not confirmed if it will retrofit existing A350s with Allegris or whether similar changes will be made to other aircraft types currently in service. The five existing Dreamliners will be transferred to Austrian Airlines. The Airbus A380 fleet is set to receive a different business class product, while retrofits for the Boeing 747-8 will occur in two phases—starting with only the lower deck before expanding throughout the plane.

The airline continues to operate a diverse mix of older widebody jets—including various models of Airbus A330s, A340s, A380s, and Boeing 747s—but many are approaching retirement age. The addition of more Dreamliners will support retiring older A340-300 jets and allow Lufthansa’s entire A330 fleet to move to Discover Airlines. In coming years, new aircraft such as the Airbus A350-1000 and Boeing 777-9 are expected to replace aging models like the A340-600 and Boeing 747-400.

“Lufthansa's Allegris business class is a custom design that is most similar to the Safran Optima. It features five different types of seats, with standard seats angled towards the aisles, privacy seats that are flush with the cabin sidewalls, extra space seats in the center of the cabin with no neighboring seats, extra-long bed seats in the center section, and Suites with sliding doors in the front row.”

Lufthansa was founded in 1953 and operates as a full-service carrier from hubs at Frankfurt Airport and Munich Airport.
