A large majority of the world’s remaining scheduled passenger Boeing 757 flights in September are operated to, from, or within the United States. Data from ch-aviation shows Delta Air Lines currently operates 102 Boeing 757 aircraft, while United Airlines has a fleet of 61. Both airlines utilize the -200 and -300 variants. Icelandair also continues to operate its 757-200s on routes to the US.

The Boeing 757 is less fuel-efficient and requires more maintenance compared to newer aircraft models. However, these older jets may be less costly for airlines since they are often paid off or available at low lease rates. Despite this advantage, airlines have been reducing their use of the type as more efficient alternatives become available. According to OAG data, US 757 flights have dropped by almost 20% compared with last September.

An analysis of scheduled passenger flights for September reveals that there are 114 routes served by the Boeing 757 in the US—83 domestic and 31 international. Among international routes, Delta operates flights from Detroit and Minneapolis to Keflavik, while United offers service between Washington Dulles and Dublin with two daily departures.

Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport features prominently among these routes due to its status as Delta’s main hub and as one of the busiest airports worldwide for passenger traffic. Over half of all Boeing 757 services in September originate from or arrive at Atlanta, although this figure represents a decrease from last year when Atlanta accounted for a higher share of such operations.

The most-served route globally for the Boeing 757 is between Atlanta and Orlando. In September, Delta will operate nearly all flights on this short-haul route using the type, with an average of twelve daily departures—reaching a peak of fourteen on Monday, September 15. On that day, all scheduled departures between Atlanta and Orlando will be flown by Delta’s Boeing 757-200 variant.

Delta’s use of the Boeing 757-200 makes it the fourth most-utilized aircraft type out of Atlanta in September, operating about one in nine departures from that airport. The top three types are the Boeing 737-900 (22%), Airbus A321ceo (17%), and Boeing 717 (16%). The airline plans to fly its fleet of Boeing 757-200s to forty-one destinations throughout September.

In comparison, Delta’s larger-capacity Boeing 757-300 ranks tenth among aircraft types used at Atlanta but has seen an increase in utilization compared with last year—a rise of fourteen percent in departures. This model is deployed on high-density leisure and hub-to-hub markets including Detroit, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, Orlando, Phoenix, Salt Lake City, San Diego, San Francisco, and Seattle.

The Boeing 757 first entered service on December 22, 1982. Its launch customers were Eastern Air Lines and British Airways.
