Rajendra Kumar Acharya UNI Asia & Pacific Regional Secretary | UNI Global Union

Community health workers (CHWs) and union representatives from South Asia convened in Kathmandu for a three-day forum aimed at improving recognition, working conditions, and the development of women-led unions. The event was coordinated by UNI Global Union with support from the SAGE Fund and included participants from India, Nepal, Bangladesh, and other countries in the Asia-Pacific region.

During the meeting, attendees discussed their experiences organizing CHWs, reviewed progress on securing contracts and labor rights, and participated in training sessions focused on campaigning and leadership skills. Organizers described the forum as an important step toward building a stronger regional movement to advocate for structural changes that would ensure fair treatment for CHWs. Many of these workers are women who often lack formal protections despite their essential roles in public health systems.

“Community health workers are the backbone of healthcare in South Asia, yet too often they are treated as disposable,” said Rajendra Acharya, UNI Global Union’s Regional Secretary for Asia and Pacific. “By coming together across borders, CHW unions are showing that they have the power, solidarity and vision to demand justice, dignity and proper recognition for their work.”

Sangita Baniya, an organizer with ANHVWU, emphasized the significance of hosting such a gathering: “Hosting this meeting in Nepal has been a historic moment for us. We community health workers and our unions from across South Asia sat together, shared our struggles, and built collective strategies for recognition, rights, and dignity. Hearing about the fight and victories of our sisters in Pakistan, and seeing the strength of organizing in Sri Lanka, has made us even more optimistic that we too can win. We learned that our challenges are deeply connected, but so are our solutions. This gathering has given us new energy and a stronger voice to demand fair pay, social protection, and respect for the essential care work we provide. It was not just a workshop—it was a step forward in uniting health workers across borders and strengthening our movement in Nepal and the whole region.”

The forum promoted cross-country networking among CHW unions throughout South Asia as well as within the broader Asia-Pacific area. Participants highlighted knowledge exchange as vital to creating sustainable networks capable of increasing regional influence. They also stressed advancing collaboration between southern countries to secure institutional recognition for community health workers.
