CEO Kelly Ortberg | Boeing

WestJet has announced a significant order for Boeing aircraft, confirming it will purchase up to 96 additional planes from the American manufacturer. The deal includes both the Boeing 737 MAX and 787 Dreamliner models, with firm orders placed for 67 aircraft—60 of which are 737 MAX 10s and seven are 787-9s—and options for an additional 29 jets.

The Canadian airline described this as its largest aircraft order to date and stated that it now holds the biggest order book among Canadian carriers. WestJet's current active fleet numbers 193 aircraft, including 147 Boeing 737s, seven Boeing 787-9s, and 39 De Havilland Dash 8s. The new orders are expected to secure the airline’s fleet needs through to at least 2034. Some of the new planes will be used for growth while others will replace older models in the fleet.

Stephanie Pope, President and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes, commented on the agreement: "We are honored that WestJet has once again placed its trust in Boeing with a major investment that builds on our three decades of partnership and solidifies their fleet for the decades ahead. We look forward to supporting WestJet's exciting growth as they leverage the 737 MAX and 787 Dreamliner..."

This move comes during a period when Boeing is experiencing renewed interest from airlines after facing several years of challenges. In recent weeks, other airlines have also made substantial orders from Boeing; MacQuaire ordered 30 more 737 MAXs yesterday, Korean Air ordered over one hundred aircraft last week, and Cathay Pacific placed an order for the Boeing 777-9 last month. Additionally, Boeing recently took its last stored 737 MAX out of storage.

WestJet was founded in 1994 and operates as a full-service carrier with hubs at Calgary International Airport, Toronto Pearson International Airport, and Vancouver International Airport.
