Jet2 continues to operate one of the world’s largest active fleets of Boeing 737-300 passenger aircraft, with seven company-owned and fully paid-off planes in service. According to ch-aviation data, these aircraft, though less fuel-efficient and requiring more maintenance compared to newer models, remain cost-effective for the airline due to their ownership status. The oldest of Jet2's -300s is G-GDFG, delivered originally to Air Europa in 1997 and now over 28 years old.

The Boeing 737-300 is becoming increasingly rare among commercial airlines. In the United Kingdom, Jet2 stands as the only operator using this classic variant for scheduled passenger flights. The airline plans to retire its remaining -300s during the winter of 2027/2028. All operations with this type are currently based at Jet2’s original hub in Leeds Bradford.

Cirium Diio data indicates that Jet2 has scheduled 368 departures using its 737-300s from Leeds Bradford in September, a notable increase from 305 departures in September 2024—a rise of about 21%. This growth means the classic model now accounts for approximately 43% of all Jet2 departures from Leeds Bradford Airport, up from 36% a year earlier.

This month, the classic jets will serve 26 routes from Leeds Bradford. However, most routes see limited use: on 19 routes there are no more than thirteen takeoffs each during September. Among these destinations is Zakynthos, Greece—at roughly 1,342 nautical miles (2,485 km) away—the longest route operated by Jet2’s -300s this month. The more modern and fuel-efficient Boeing 737-800 also operates on some overlapping routes.

Sixteen out of the twenty-six total destinations are exclusively served by the -300 model this month. These include Almeria, Barcelona, Bergerac, Budapest, Dubrovnik, Jersey, Kraków, Menorca, Naples, Nice, Paris CDG, Pisa, Prague, Rome Fiumicino, Split, and Verona.

The five busiest routes for Jet2’s classic fleet in September are Palma de Mallorca (58 departures), Alicante (44), Faro (36), Malaga (34), and Ibiza (22). For example: “Even when the Classic has more than 30 departures in September, it does not mean that each day has one. Even Palma de Mallorca, the top route, doesn't. The -300 won't be used on September 24, 28 or 29.” Like many other Leeds-based services for Jet2 this month, these routes are operated alongside flights using newer Boeing models.

On average throughout September there are twelve daily departures by Jet2’s -300s from Leeds Bradford; numbers range between six and fifteen depending on the day—with Saturdays being busiest. Historically speaking however: “its highest activity ever was 25 daily departures,” a record reached only on select dates during summer of 2008.

Looking at specific scheduling patterns such as those on September 6 reveals how intensively these aircraft are utilized: “That day,the737-300 will operate15ofJet2's32departures...” including flights to Pisa,Mallorca,Faro, and others.“Catch them while you can.”

Boeing first delivered the initial version of its narrowbody jetliner—the737—on February10th1968,to Lufthansa. The aircraft family remains widely used globally despite certain older variants like the-300 nearing retirement.
