AirlineRatings has announced the introduction of its Onboard Safety Audits, a new initiative aimed at enhancing the visibility and recognition of airline safety standards for travelers. The company says these audits are designed to focus on the onboard safety experience, building on its existing safety ratings and annual rankings.

According to AirlineRatings, airlines that already hold a Seven Star safety rating and successfully complete these anonymous audits—conducted over six varied flights—will receive special recognition as Seven Star Plus airlines. This is described as the highest accolade now offered by the organization. Airlines not yet at seven stars will be reviewed after the audit, with results intended to guide them toward improved safety performance.

The audits are conducted anonymously across different flight types, including overnight, day, domestic, international, short-haul, and long-haul journeys. Once completed, airlines receive a report detailing findings and tailored recommendations within a week.

"With around 40% of flyers feeling nervous, anxious, or even terrified at the thought of flying, AirlineRatings’ onboard safety audits provide an added layer of reassurance. While passengers may not see the incredible work that goes into maintaining an aircraft and ensuring airline safety, what they do experience—the 'face of safety'—is what happens onboard. Airlines that complete and pass these audits give nervous passengers an extra piece of mind," said AirlineRatings in its announcement.

The company noted that while it does not assess maintenance or repair facilities during these audits, further information from airlines may be incorporated into ratings if invited after completion.

Airlines benefit from these audits by identifying potential compliance gaps with international standards before regulatory issues arise. "Within a week of completion, airlines receive a professional, actionable report detailing findings, risk levels, and tailored recommendations from our auditor," according to AirlineRatings.

In addition to certification and branding benefits displayed on both AirlineRatings’ website and social media channels, carriers completing the audit gain additional consideration in the World’s Safest Airline Awards. The company says this could enhance consumer confidence—particularly among international travelers unfamiliar with certain brands—and offer commercial advantages.

"For low-cost airlines, these audits are yet another way we can help them break the stigma that low-cost carriers are 'less safe'—something we know simply isn’t true," stated AirlineRatings.

The organization reports that its first four onboard safety audits have been scheduled.
