Federal Express Corporation has officially opened its new global air transit facility at Istanbul Airport (IST). The move strengthens FedEx's position in international logistics and supports Turkey’s growing role as a global hub for air cargo and cross-border e-commerce.

The inauguration ceremony included the participation of Raj Subramaniam, president and chief executive officer of FedEx Corporation; Richard W. Smith, chief operating officer, International and chief executive officer, Airline, FedEx; Wouter Roels, president FedEx Europe; Eser Sezek, vice president ground operations of FedEx Türkiye; and Selahattin Bilgen, executive director of iGA Istanbul Airport.

Operational since August 2025, the new facility represents a major long-term investment by FedEx. The company aims to strengthen its global network and demonstrate its commitment to international trade through advanced logistics infrastructure and technology.

Located at the crossroads of Europe, Asia, and Africa, Istanbul is positioned as a strategic logistics center. The new facility connects Turkey with 30 weekly FedEx flights to and from key markets in the U.S., Europe, and the Middle East. It also allows for future network expansions in the region. The integration links FedEx’s global air network with one of the largest ground networks in the area—serving 45 countries and handling 1.3 million shipments each week.

Covering 25,300 square meters, the center brings together essential operations such as air connectivity functions, integrated customs clearance teams, and administrative support under one roof. It features technologies like an automated sorting system, high-speed security scanning equipment, and capabilities for handling hazardous goods. The facility can process up to 7,000 packages per hour—three times more than previous capacities—improving volume management significantly. Three automated X-ray machines equipped with artificial intelligence further enhance speed, accuracy, and security during shipment inspections.
