Starting in December, Air Caraïbes will introduce a new short-haul widebody service as part of its Paris Orly-Samana-Santo Domingo-Paris Orly route. The Samana-Santo Domingo segment, which is entirely within the Dominican Republic and does not have traffic rights, is scheduled to take 40 minutes and covers just 50 nautical miles (93 kilometers). This flight will be operated using the airline’s Airbus A350-900 aircraft, which seats 389 passengers.

Air Caraïbes has been flying from Paris Orly to Santo Domingo for 13 years but has not previously served Samana. The addition of Samana will provide the only direct link from Europe to this destination on the north coast of the Dominican Republic. The first flight is set for December 15, with service increasing from once weekly to twice weekly by early 2026. The stop in Samana offers a cost-effective way for Air Caraïbes to serve the area while limiting risk.

Over the past twenty years, Samana has received flights from various European cities including Copenhagen, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Helsinki, Lisbon, London Gatwick, Madrid, Milan Malpensa, Moscow Sheremetyevo, Paris CDG and Paris Orly (until 2008), and Stockholm Arlanda.

During winter operations, local times for each leg are: Paris Orly-Samana departs at 11:45 and arrives at 16:20 after nine hours and thirty-five minutes; Samana-Santo Domingo departs at 17:30 and arrives at 18:10; Santo Domingo-Paris Orly departs at 20:20 and arrives at 09:50+1.

This new route places Air Caraïbes among several airlines offering scheduled widebody flights with block times of no more than forty minutes between December and February. Other examples include Zanzibar-Dar es Salaam (Air Tanzania), Bonaire-Curaçao (Corendon), St Kitts-Antigua (British Airways), Punta Cana-Santo Domingo (Air Caraïbes on one date), Bandar-Kota Kinabalu (Royal Brunei), Banjul-Dakar (Brussels Airlines), Billund-Copenhagen (Sunclass), Brazzaville-Kinshasa (Air France), Freetown-Conakry (Brussels Airlines), Lomé-Accra (Brussels Airlines), Malabo-Douala (Air France) and others. Of these routes by time block minimums—not distance—Zanzibar-Dar es Salaam ranks first as the world’s shortest bookable widebody operation.

For context on other short-haul widebody services worldwide during this period:

- Air Tanzania operates three weekly Boeing 787-8 flights between Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar as part of its Dar-Guangzhou-Zanzibar-Dar loop. Each aircraft seats 262 passengers in two classes.

- The Dar-Zanzibar segment can be completed in as little as twelve minutes according to Flightradar24 data.

- Africa saw over 800,000 round-trip air passengers between Guangzhou and African cities from July 2024 through June 2025; most traveled with Ethiopian Airlines or EgyptAir but Air Tanzania remains a notable operator due to its cargo capacity on China routes.

Boeing remains one of the leading commercial aircraft manufacturers globally since its founding in July 1916.
