Virgin Australia has received its first Embraer E190-E2 aircraft, which landed in Perth after a multi-leg ferry flight from Brazil. The delivery marks the start of a fleet renewal for Virgin Australia Regional Airlines (VARA), the regional arm of Virgin Australia.

The new jet, registered as VH-E2A, departed São José dos Campos in Brazil on September 3. Its route included stops in Curacao, Texas, California, Hawaii, Fiji, and Canberra before arriving at Perth Airport on September 8. According to Flightradar24 data, the journey took place over several days with the longest sector being more than six hours and 30 minutes from Kona to Nadi.

Scott Woodward, Chief Operating Officer at Perth Airport, commented on the arrival: "It is fantastic to see this impressive new E190-E2 aircraft arrive at its new home at Perth Airport. The new aircraft provides regional customers [with] more options and shows VARA’s commitment to Western Australia. We look forward to working with the airline as [it grows its] operations at Perth Airport."

The introduction of the E190-E2 is part of Virgin Australia's plan to modernize its regional fleet by replacing aging Fokker 100 jets. The airline has committed to eight Embraer E190-E2s under a $300 million deal with Embraer. Three additional deliveries are expected within the next year.

Virgin Australia considered both the Airbus A220 and Embraer E190-E2 before deciding on the latter in August 2024. The airline aims to retire all Fokker 100s from early 2026 as these new aircraft enter service.

Embraer S.A., headquartered in Sao Paulo and led by CEO Francisco Gomes Neto, manufactures the E190-E2 model delivered to Virgin Australia.
