A WestJet Boeing 737-800, registration C-GWSR, experienced a landing gear collapse while arriving at Princess Juliana International Airport in Sint Maarten on September 8, 2025. The aircraft was operating as flight WS2276 from Toronto and had 164 passengers and crew on board.

The incident occurred when the plane touched down on runway 10 at 13:28 local time. The right main landing gear collapsed upon landing. The crew kept control of the jet, which came to rest supported by its nose gear, left main gear, and right engine nacelle.

Emergency services arrived within minutes of the event. Although there was no fire, they sprayed the aircraft with water as a precaution. About eight minutes after stopping, evacuation slides were deployed and passengers exited onto the tarmac safely.

Airport officials stated that there were no serious injuries. Three people were taken for medical evaluation as a precaution. The aircraft sustained damage to its right wing, and the return flight WS2277 was cancelled.

WestJet released a statement regarding the incident: “WestJet flight 2276, operating from Toronto, experienced a hard landing upon arrival at Princess Juliana International Airport (SXM) at 17:29 UTC today. The passengers were evacuated via slides; there are no reported injuries.”

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada has started an investigation into the incident and sent a team to Sint Maarten.

Video footage from SHOWME Caribbean’s YouTube livestream captured the moment when the right main gear collapsed during touchdown. Emergency vehicles quickly surrounded the aircraft after it stopped on the runway.

The Boeing 737-800 involved in this event was delivered to WestJet in 2009 and had not been involved in any previous accidents before this occurrence.

WestJet maintains a seven star safety rating on AirlineRatings.com. This incident will not affect that rating at this stage (https://www.airlineratings.com/ratings/westjet/).
