Apple last fully updated the AirPods Pro in 2022. Travelers using older versions may find these enhancements appealing if Apple's claims about improved noise cancellation hold true.
In terms of smartphones, Apple introduced an all-new model called iPhone Air as part of its iPhone 17 lineup. This device is described as Apple's thinnest phone yet at 5.6 millimeters thick. The tradeoff for this slim profile is a less advanced camera system compared to other models in the lineup.
"Historically, Apple hasn't used the 'Air' moniker for the iPhone family, preferring to keep it limited to the iPad and MacBook lineup," Griff noted.
The base iPhone 17 model and higher-end versions—17 Pro and 17 Pro Max—feature larger cameras and batteries. One significant change is the removal of physical SIM cards from many new models in favor of eSIM technology. This digital standard simplifies switching between carriers while traveling internationally by allowing users to activate service without needing a physical card slot or visiting a store (https://thepointsguy.com/guide/how-to-use-esim-when-traveling/).
"For the first time, Apple is using the space left over from the elimination of the physical SIM slot to add more battery space," Griff added.
Apple also updated its watch offerings with Series 11, Ultra 3, and SE 3 models. The watches now support 5G wireless technology for faster connectivity on-the-go. Satellite connectivity has been introduced for emergency communication even when cellular service is unavailable; this feature will be available only on Ultra 3.
"Plus, satellite connectivity comes to the watch lineup for the first time, meaning that you can contact emergency services, send messages and share your location in real time, even if you don't have cellular service," Griff explained.
Despite speculation leading up to Tuesday's event about an update for Apple's item trackers known as AirTags—which were expected to receive upgrades such as increased range and louder speakers—the company did not announce any changes or new versions during this presentation (https://thepointsguy.com/news/apple-airtags-tips-for-travelers/).
Rumors continue regarding potential improvements for future AirTags releases but no timeline was provided by Apple at this event.
