UNI Asia & Pacific has voiced concern following the deaths of at least 19 young people during recent demonstrations in Nepal on September 8, 2025. The protests, led by youth, resulted in many injuries and have been described as one of the most serious incidents in Nepal’s recent history.

Rajendra Acharya, UNI Asia & Pacific Regional Secretary, said: “It is heartbreaking to see the lives of so many young people cut short. Young people’s voices must be heard, not silenced. We urge the authorities in Nepal to exercise the fullest restraint and to refrain from using force in ways that violate international human rights standards.”

Christy Hoffman, General Secretary of UNI Global Union, stated: “The government must act urgently to open space for meaningful dialogue and commit to reforms that address corruption, economic opportunity, and the rights of citizens. UNI Global Union stands in solidarity with young people in Nepal who are calling for justice and change.”

Both UNI Asia & Pacific and UNI Global Union stressed that peaceful protest is a democratic right and called for constructive engagement with the grievances raised by youth rather than responding with violence.

Following the resignation of Nepal’s Prime Minister, UNI called on all political groups to focus on stability, uphold democratic processes and rule of law, and respect national sovereignty. The statement also urged all parties to engage in dialogue to ensure a peaceful transition of power while avoiding actions that could worsen polarization or uncertainty. International partners were encouraged to maintain their support for Nepal’s democratic institutions and socio-economic development during this period.

In an update as events continue to develop, UNI Global Union reiterated its call for authorities to respect human rights and act with restraint. “We stand with young people in their legitimate demands for justice and change, which must be achieved through peaceful means and respect for property,” according to a statement from UNI Global Union.
