Diana Birkett Rakow, CEO | Hawaiian Airlines

Alaska Air Group has named Diana Birkett Rakow as the new CEO of Hawaiian Airlines, marking the first time a woman will lead the airline. Rakow is set to take over on October 29, following the retirement of Joe Sprague. She will be based in Honolulu and report directly to Alaska Air Group CEO Ben Minicucci.

Rakow’s appointment comes as Hawaiian Airlines moves toward integration under a single operating certificate (SOC) with Alaska Airlines. This process follows Alaska Air Group’s $1.9 billion acquisition of Hawaiian Airlines, which was announced in December 2023 and completed in September 2024. The merger aims to create a larger network across the West Coast and Pacific regions, with plans for expanded global connectivity through the oneworld Alliance.

Diana Birkett Rakow currently serves as Senior Vice President of Public Affairs and Sustainability at Alaska Airlines, where she has led efforts in government affairs, communications, community relations, sales, customer engagement in Hawaii and Alaska, and managed the airline’s venture investment arm. She also sits on the board of Hawaiian Airlines. Prior to joining Alaska Airlines about eight years ago, Rakow held executive roles at Group Health and Kaiser Permanente and worked as a health policy advisor for the US Senate Finance Committee.

"Hawai‘i and the Hawaiian Airlines brand are critical to Alaska Air Group’s future and key to our vision of connecting the world to a remarkable travel experience rooted in safety, care and performance. Diana has proven herself over an established career as a leader who builds strong teams, delivers results and cares deeply about people and culture. She will be a tireless advocate for the Hawaiian Airlines brand and for Hawai‘i," said Ben Minicucci.

Rakow’s role will include overseeing daily operations at Hawaiian while also guiding long-term strategies related to sustainability and venture investments for Alaska Air Group. A key focus will be completing the SOC process with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), which will bring Hawaiian fully under Alaska’s operating structure.

Joe Sprague has led Hawaiian since the merger closed last year and through much of its integration process. He began his career at Alaska more than 25 years ago before serving as president of Horizon Air in 2019. After taking on leadership at Hawaiian when it became part of Alaska Air Group in 2024, Sprague will remain involved during Rakow's transition period and continue serving on Hawaiian's board.

Since acquiring Hawaiian Airlines nearly one year ago, Alaska has sought to expand its reach into international markets by leveraging combined resources from both carriers. The group now operates an expanded fleet that includes Airbus A330s, A321neos, Boeing 717s, Boeing 787s from Hawaiian alongside Alaska's Boeing 737 aircraft.

Earlier this year, Alaska launched intercontinental service between Seattle-Tacoma International Airport and Tokyo Narita using a Hawaiian Airbus A330-200 aircraft. Additional nonstop flights are planned between Seattle-Tacoma International Airport and Seoul Incheon this fall; further services to Rome, London Heathrow, and Reykjavík are expected by 2026.

The combined carrier is working toward obtaining a single operating certificate from FAA later this fall.
