Manufacturers continue efforts to make aircraft more efficient through various modifications such as winglets. The VCT Finlets offer an option for airlines seeking efficiency improvements while waiting for new aircraft deliveries.
Before receiving EASA validation, VCT Finlets were implemented by SunExpress in Türkiye—outside EASA’s jurisdiction—beginning in May 2024 with five Boeing 737-800s. Following a successful trial period reported by Airline Economics (https://www.airlineeconomics.com/), SunExpress plans to install finlets across its entire fleet of over 40 additional aircraft as part of its environmental initiatives aimed at reducing carbon emissions.
In the United States, Avelo Airlines has also adopted VCT Finlets after positive results over an 18-month period. All Avelo Boeing 737NGs now use these devices. The airline initially projected annual savings of approximately 560,000 gallons (2.1 million liters) of fuel and reductions in CO2 emissions by about 11 million pounds (4.9 million kilograms). Operational data confirmed these projections, leading Avelo to order more finlets as it expands its fleet.
The US Air Force is currently testing finlet technology on MC-130J aircraft through developmental flight tests conducted by the 417th Flight Test Squadron at Eglin Air Force Base. Similar tests have been performed on C-130 Hercules planes with reported improvements in range and fuel efficiency.
