The Lufthansa Group has announced a reorganization of its internal cooperation, aiming to bring its airlines closer together and enhance integration. The changes will affect organizational structure, processes, financial management, and cross-group collaboration. The company expects these steps to strengthen the market position of its hub airlines—Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, and Brussels Airlines—while also increasing efficiency and profitability.

According to the group, each airline will continue making independent decisions regarding customer experience elements such as in-flight products, catering, lounges in their home markets, and passenger service. Management of flight operations will also remain with each respective hub airline.

In operational areas less visible to passengers, the group plans deeper integration among airlines. This follows models already used for loyalty programs like “Miles and More” and development of the customer app—which is built centrally but customized for each airline.

Network management for short- and medium-haul flights across all hub airlines will now be managed at a group-wide level. This approach has been in place for long-haul offerings for ten years. As a result, commercial offering management will be consolidated under group-wide airline functions. The company says this move should benefit customers who use multiple group carriers by providing more coordinated services while enabling faster decision-making.

Future cooperation within the group will be overseen by new “Group Function Boards,” which include representatives from both individual airlines and central group functions. These boards are chaired by members of the Group Executive Board responsible for specific areas; topics discussed include customer-related issues (Hub Steering), technology, HR, and finance. A Functional Financial Controller will also participate on boards focused on financial management.

To advance digitalization and innovation efforts, IT functions will be consolidated under CTO Grazia Vittadini’s department. Digital units from ‘Digital Hangar’ will merge with ‘Innovation & Tech Factory’ into a central role tasked with advancing technological progress throughout the Lufthansa Group. This step is intended to create centralized digital expertise covering operations as well as customer-facing and corporate activities.

The target date for implementing these changes is January 1, 2026.
