In 2024, oneworld marked its 25th anniversary by reflecting on its development from a partnership between American Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Qantas, and Canadian International in 1999 to an alliance of 15 members and over 20 affiliated airlines. The alliance now connects more than 1,000 cities in 170 countries through a coordinated global network.

Each day, approximately 13,000 flights are operated by oneworld member airlines. This level of coordination is managed by about 360,000 staff worldwide who handle operations ranging from baggage handling to catering.

Since its founding, the alliance has focused on making air travel more seamless for passengers. Travelers can check their luggage through to their final destination even when switching between member airlines. In 2018 alone, the alliance carried over 535 million passengers. Since its inception, almost seven billion people have flown with oneworld carriers.

On June 30, 2025, Oman Air became the newest full member of oneworld. As the flag carrier of Oman with a base at Muscat International Airport (MCT), Oman Air adds connections across the Middle East and South Asia and operates flights to 42 destinations in 22 countries. The airline has won several international awards for service quality.

"We are proud to welcome Oman Air to the oneworld family. Oman Air brings valuable strategic reach and award-winning product and service to the alliance. This partnership opens up exciting new connections for our customers, particularly across the Gulf and South Asia, and reinforces oneworld's position as the premium alliance for international travellers," said Nat Pieper, CEO of oneworld.

Con Korfiatis, CEO of Oman Air, stated: "Oman Air is honoured to be joining the oneworld alliance, whose members and global footprint represent the best of what international travellers want to experience. We are thrilled to be able to welcome customers to the Sultanate of Oman to experience our unique culture, stunning mountain excursions, beautiful beaches, and, above all, the warm hospitality of the Omani people."

With full membership in oneworld, Oman Air will allow its loyalty program members access to earn and redeem miles across all partner airlines as well as other privileges such as lounge access at nearly 700 locations globally.

The alliance has expanded steadily since Finnair and Iberia joined shortly after launch. New members have brought increased coverage in regions such as Africa with Royal Air Maroc joining in 2020.

oneworld introduced several products over time including multi-airline round-the-world tickets sold online via "oneworld Explorer" and regional passes like Visit Europe or Visit Africa. Its flexible "oneworld Connect" model was launched in 2018; Fiji Airways became its first connect partner that year.

Approximately eight million travelers fly each year using two or more member airlines per trip. Top-tier frequent flyers enjoy benefits like first-class lounge access even when traveling economy class.

The group has also implemented joint ventures among members—for example British Airways and Iberia coordinated operations at Madrid’s Terminal 4 starting in February 2006—and continues efforts toward improving efficiency for both business travelers and leisure passengers alike.

Today headquartered near Dallas Fort Worth International Airport in Texas under CEO Nathaniel Pieper’s leadership, onweworld remains one of three major global airline alliances with a broad portfolio that includes Alaska Airlines; American Airlines; British Airways; Cathay Pacific; Finnair; Iberia; Japan Airlines; Malaysia Airlines; Qantas; Qatar Airways; Royal Air Maroc; Royal Jordanian; SriLankan Airlines; Fiji Airways (as connect partner); plus various affiliates such as American Eagle or QantasLink.
