In April 2023, Qatar Airways announced it would take delivery of Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft originally intended for Russian airline S7. The transfer came after international sanctions prevented delivery to Russian carriers following Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
The jets were redirected to Qatar Airways and were expected to be delivered around mid-2023. This move allowed the airline to quickly expand its narrowbody fleet by acquiring planes that had already been produced but could not be sent to their initial buyer due to geopolitical restrictions.
