Scott Kirby, chief executive officer | United Airlines

United Airlines plans to retire its Boeing 767 fleet by 2030, according to CEO Scott Kirby. The airline is also considering whether to proceed with its long-standing order for Airbus A350 aircraft, a decision that has been delayed several times.

Speaking at the APEX Global Expo 2025, Kirby stated, "By the end of the decade, we will be well into retiring the 767. It is a natural time to at least think about whether to make the Airbus A350 order firm in the 2030 timeframe." United currently operates 53 Boeing 767s, which are among the oldest in its fleet and play a significant role on transatlantic routes.

The average age of United’s 767s is nearing 28 years, with some airframes dating back to 1991. United holds the world’s second-largest passenger 767 fleet after Delta Air Lines. Both airlines are expected to phase out their remaining 767s within the next five years.

United has focused on expanding its Boeing 787 Dreamliner fleet, holding more than 140 orders for this aircraft type. The company initially ordered 25 Airbus A350-900s in 2009 and later increased its commitment to a total of 45 aircraft through various conversions between different A350 models. However, deliveries have been repeatedly deferred in favor of additional Boeing aircraft.

If United proceeds with acquiring the A350-900, it would fill a gap between its current Boeing widebody models and could serve as a replacement for older Boeing 777s due to its longer range and higher seating capacity. However, introducing a new aircraft type like the A350 would increase operational costs compared to maintaining fleet commonality with existing types such as the Boeing 787.

Kirby addressed past concerns regarding an engine deal with Rolls-Royce for the A350 order. He said that while he previously criticized it as unfavorable, changing market conditions might now make it beneficial for United.

Kirby has indicated that if United does move forward with inducting the Airbus A350 into its fleet, it would likely do so only on a larger scale—potentially ordering more than 100 planes—to achieve better economies of scale. Whether United will commit beyond its current order remains undecided.

Delta Air Lines also maintains a sizable fleet of Boeing 767s but is expected to retire them over a similar period as United.

United Airlines was founded in 1931 and operates as a full-service carrier from several major hubs including Chicago O'Hare International Airport and Newark Liberty International Airport.
