American Airlines Boeing 787 | Simple Flying

American Airlines continues to operate a significant fleet of Boeing 787 Dreamliners, focusing on long-haul international routes from its major U.S. hubs. The airline currently has 67 Boeing 787s in service, split between 37 787-8s and 30 787-9s, according to ch-aviation data.

Data from Cirium indicates that in 2025, American Airlines scheduled over 16,000 flights using its Dreamliner fleet from its five busiest hubs. Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) is the top hub for these operations, with 5,945 flights and approximately 1.4 million seats offered this year. The airport serves as a key gateway for transatlantic travel, with American deploying the aircraft on routes to cities such as Amsterdam, London Heathrow, Edinburgh, Dublin, Paris, Madrid, and Barcelona. London Heathrow is the most popular transatlantic destination from Philadelphia for the airline’s Dreamliners, accounting for 575 flights in 2025.

American Airlines also operates domestic Dreamliner services from Philadelphia to Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW), Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD), and Miami International Airport (MIA). The route between Philadelphia and Miami is the busiest among these domestic connections.

Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport stands as American’s second-busiest base for Boeing 787 operations with 3,662 scheduled flights and more than 930,000 seats in 2025. The most frequent Dreamliner route from DFW is to Philadelphia. Other notable international destinations served by the airline’s Dreamliners from Dallas include Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Venice, Barcelona, São Paulo, Kahului, Honolulu, Tokyo Haneda, and Shanghai.

Chicago O’Hare ranks third among American’s Boeing 787 hubs with over 2,500 scheduled flights this year. Miami follows closely behind with more than 2,200 Dreamliner departures. London Heathrow appears as the fifth-busiest hub for American’s Boeing 787 operations outside of the United States.

The carrier has customized some of its Boeing 787-9s—known as the “787-9P”—with a premium-heavy cabin layout featuring business suites and redesigned premium economy seating alongside standard economy seats.

In January of this year, American Airlines faced delays in receiving new Boeing 787 deliveries. This led to the suspension of three European routes and reduced frequencies during peak summer travel periods. At that time the company stated: “American is adjusting service on certain routes in summer 2025 to ensure we are able to re-accommodate customers on affected flights.”

Later in June of this year American suspended six transatlantic routes planned for winter but clarified that these changes were due to lower seasonal demand rather than delivery issues related to its Dreamliner fleet.
