Southwest Airlines | Simple Flying

Southwest Airlines is operating four multi-stop routes in September, each with six flight segments under a single flight number. These routes are part of the airline’s extensive daily schedule, which includes 3,733 flights and utilizes its fleet of 804 Boeing 737 aircraft.

The four multi-stop routes for September are WN39, WN1917, WN2245, and WN2703. All are scheduled to be operated by the 143-seat Boeing 737-700. The routes vary in distance and geography, covering large portions of the United States and spanning several time zones.

For example, flight WN1917 begins its day in Salt Lake City at 05:00 local time and concludes in Nashville at 22:35 after stops in Chicago Midway, Louisville, Dallas Love Field, Albuquerque, and Phoenix. The total journey covers 4,008 nautical miles (7,423 km). According to the schedule data submitted to Cirium Diio, these complex routings allow Southwest to maximize aircraft utilization across its network.

Booking a single ticket for all legs of these routes is not possible; passengers can only book select segments on one reservation. For instance, travelers on WN39 could book from Greenville/Spartanburg to Baltimore or from Baltimore to Albuquerque but would need separate tickets to continue beyond those points on the same aircraft.

Southwest’s multi-stop flights change regularly throughout the year. In addition to the four six-segment routes this month, there are fifteen other routes with five segments each. One such example is WN3546 on Sundays in September: it departs Houston Hobby at 10:35 and arrives in San Diego at 21:55 after stopping in Charleston, Baltimore, Detroit, and Denver—a total distance of 3,288 nautical miles (6,089 km).

Southwest operates as a low-cost carrier with major hubs including Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport; Dallas Love Field; Denver International Airport; Harry Reid International Airport; Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport; Houston Hobby Airport; Los Angeles International Airport; Midway International Airport; Oakland International Airport; Orlando International Airport; and Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. The airline was founded in 1967.

These long multi-stop services remain a distinctive feature of Southwest’s operations as it seeks ways to improve financial performance through efficient use of its aircraft fleet.
