A Delta Air Lines Boeing 767-300ER was diverted to Salt Lake City International Airport on September 10, 2025, after the crew shut down one of its engines due to an in-flight failure. The aircraft, registered as N178DN, was operating flight DL365 from New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport to Los Angeles International Airport when the incident occurred.

Flight DL365 is a daily transcontinental service scheduled to depart New York at 17:00 local time and arrive in Los Angeles at 20:34. On this occasion, the flight left JFK 46 minutes behind schedule and encountered trouble while cruising at 36,000 feet about 90 nautical miles north of Salt Lake City. The crew announced they had shut down the left-hand PW4060 turbofan engine following a reported failure.

The plane landed safely on runway 16L at Salt Lake City just over half an hour after the issue arose. Passengers disembarked without further incident. The jet remained grounded for more than a day for inspection and repairs before returning to service.

Delta Air Lines has not yet provided further comment regarding the cause of the engine failure but stated that updates would be shared when available.

N178DN is among Delta’s older Boeing 767-300ERs, having first flown in January 1991 and delivered three months later. It is equipped with 36 business class seats and 175 economy seats. Delta currently operates a fleet of both Boeing 767-300ERs and -400ERs with an average age nearing three decades.

After repairs were completed in Utah, N178DN repositioned back to New York as flight DL9963 on September 12 and resumed regular passenger operations later that evening with a flight to Prague.

Delta Air Lines is part of the SkyTeam alliance and operates hubs across several major U.S. airports including Boston Logan, Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International, Los Angeles International, Minneapolis-St. Paul International, New York JFK, LaGuardia Airport, Salt Lake City International Airport, and Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.

"Simple Flying has reached out to Delta Air Lines for further information regarding this incident. We will update our coverage when we receive a comment or statement from the carrier."
