Aengus Kelly, CEO | Aercap

AerCap, the world’s largest aircraft lessor, has delivered the first two Boeing 777-300ERSF Passenger-to-Freighter (P2F) converted aircraft to Kalitta Air. The deliveries mark a significant milestone for both AerCap and the Boeing 777 program as these are the first of their kind to enter service.

The conversion work was carried out by Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), which has become a leading player in P2F conversions. The aircraft received Supplemental Type Certificates from both the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the Civil Aviation Authority of Israel (CAAI), clearing them for commercial operation.

The two converted aircraft were flown from Tel Aviv Ben Gurion Airport to Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport before being transferred to Oscoda-Wurtsmith Airport. The first arrived on September 12 and the second on September 13. Kalitta Air intends to put both into revenue service in early October, with additional deliveries planned soon. The new freighters will gradually replace Kalitta’s older Boeing 747Fs, allowing for more operational flexibility and reduced emissions.

AerCap CEO Aengus Kelly commented, “We are delighted to deliver the very first 777-300ERSF to our unwavering partner Kalitta Air, who have been with us shoulder to shoulder throughout this journey. With certification now received from both the CAAI and FAA, we are pleased to begin delivering the aircraft to our customers – a significant milestone for the program.”

AerCap was also the launch customer for this conversion program while Kalitta Air is its launch operator. Extensive certification and testing were required before approval at a maximum payload capacity of 100 tonnes. The introduction of these large freighters is expected to boost global air cargo capacity and efficiency.

Kalitta Air CEO Connie Kalitta stated that these additions will provide greater range and payload capability amid growing demand in air freight markets. The converted freighter offers lower operating costs than current models and is expected to be highly competitive in its sector.

According to IAI, compared with similar models such as the Boeing 777-200LRF or Boeing 747-400F, this variant delivers lower operating costs per tonne, improved fuel efficiency, increased range of up to 4,650 nautical miles (8,612 km), and greater cargo volume.

Both delivered planes previously served as passenger jets with Emirates before undergoing conversion. One began flying in May 2006 while another dates back to March 2005; each had logged tens of thousands of flight hours prior to their transformation into cargo carriers.

Kalitta Air expects five more converted units over coming months as part of an order book that includes around sixty total conversions secured by IAI so far. IAI plans further expansion of its conversion facilities worldwide and continues development on other specialized platforms such as an aerial firefighting version based on different aircraft types.

Boeing’s widebody family remains popular globally with ongoing production lines including next-generation models like the 777X series intended for both passenger and freight use.
