Airbus is preparing to expand its manufacturing operations in the United States by opening a second final assembly line for its A320 family of aircraft at its Mobile, Alabama facility. The announcement comes as the company marks the tenth anniversary of establishing its US-based assembly line.

The Mobile plant, which has received $1 billion in investment from Airbus, is set to become the fourth-largest commercial aircraft assembly line globally. The site also produces the A220 regional jet alongside the A320 series.

Over the past decade, Airbus has increased its workforce at Brookley Aeroplex from 300 to 2,000 employees and expanded its footprint from 116 acres to 190 acres. The location benefits from proximity to major transportation infrastructure and is near Pensacola, Florida, home to a significant aviation training hub.

Daryl Taylor, Senior Vice President of US Commercial Aircraft Operations at Airbus, commented on the milestone: “What began as a vision has evolved into something truly special, creating thousands of jobs, fostering generational careers, and driving substantial economic growth – not just in Mobile – but across the region. I could not be more proud of our team.”

The Mobile Aeroplex at Brookley occupies a strategic position within the Gulf Coast aerospace cluster. After Brookley Air Base was closed in 1969 and transferred to city control, it attracted numerous aviation firms due to its combination of sea, rail, road, and air access.

Airbus’s presence in the United States extends beyond Alabama. The company works with suppliers across more than 40 states and employs over 2,000 people directly in the country. Its supply chain supports more than 5,000 American jobs and involves annual spending exceeding $15 billion.

The Mobile Aeroplex serves as Mobile’s secondary commercial airport—officially named Mobile Downtown Airport—and focuses on flight-testing and specialized operations while handling limited passenger traffic.

In terms of industry performance this year, Airbus delivered 61 airplanes in August 2025 alone and reached a total of 434 deliveries so far for the year. The company aims for 820 deliveries by year-end and reports being on track toward that goal according to CNBC reporting (https://www.cnbc.com/2025/09/01/airbus-deliveries-august.html). By comparison, Boeing reported only 385 deliveries through August.

The expansion of Airbus’s US production capabilities comes amid ongoing trade tensions between Washington and Europe. Demand for Airbus aircraft remains strong domestically while rival Boeing faces certification delays with its 737 MAX program.

The first delivery of an A320 took place on March 28, 1988; since then over 11,500 units have been delivered worldwide from various production sites including Toulouse in France.

Airbus’s investment decisions are influenced by both market demand and international trade policy developments under current US administration policies regarding tariffs.
