Amazon has become the first company to use sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) at Ontario International Airport. This move is part of a new agreement with Neste, which involves supplying 7,500 metric tons, or 2.5 million gallons, of Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel.

Neste's SAF can reduce lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80% compared to traditional fossil jet fuel. The fuel is produced from renewable raw materials such as used cooking oil and animal fat waste. Amazon plans to utilize this SAF at Ontario International Airport until the end of 2025.

Ontario International Airport recently experienced its busiest September on record in 2024, bolstered by strong passenger traffic and increased cargo volumes, according to the Los Angeles Times. The airport plays a significant role as a distribution center in the Inland Empire region.

Amazon has set a goal to achieve net-zero carbon emissions across its global operations by 2040. In its 2023 sustainability report, Amazon highlighted a 7% reduction in carbon intensity while overall business activity expanded. The adoption of SAF at Ontario International Airport aligns with Amazon's long-term strategy for reducing emissions.

Neste, based in Finland, produces renewable fuels including sustainable aviation fuel and renewable diesel. It maintains SAF supply chains throughout North America and collaborates with airports like Ontario to promote lower-emission aviation solutions. In 2023, Corporate Knights recognized Neste as one of the world's top 100 most sustainable companies.
