The Diamond Circle, a scenic route in northern Iceland, is gaining attention as an alternative to the popular Golden Circle in the south. The route appeals to travelers seeking less crowded destinations and unique landscapes shaped by volcanic activity.

Located far from Reykjavík, the Diamond Circle is best accessed by flying into Akureyri or Egilsstaðir. Akureyri offers proximity to Goðafoss waterfall, which is about 22 miles away and roughly a 40-minute drive. Egilsstaðir provides easier access to Dettifoss and Ásbyrgi canyon. Both towns have airports with regular domestic flights from Reykjavík.

The Diamond Circle connects with Iceland’s main Ring Road, allowing visitors to integrate it into longer self-drive tours around the country. The five main stops on this route are Goðafoss waterfall, Húsavík fishing town, Ásbyrgi canyon, Dettifoss waterfall, and the geothermal area near Lake Mývatn. These locations highlight some of Iceland’s notable natural features and offer opportunities for detours.

Compared to the Golden Circle—which includes Þingvellir National Park, Geysir geothermal area, and Gullfoss waterfall—the Diamond Circle requires more planning due to its remoteness. Travelers are advised to set aside several days for a self-led tour of the region.

With transportation arranged and an itinerary planned, visitors can explore these sites at their own pace.
