Some airlines are now required to provide free water for passengers on board, following a new directive issued in Turkey. The Turkish Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Abdulkadir Uraloğlu, has instructed the General Directorate of Civil Aviation to ensure that all airlines operating within or from Turkey must offer each passenger at least 6.7 ounces (200 milliliters) of complimentary water, regardless of flight duration.

This measure applies to both domestic and international flights departing from Turkey. Both local and foreign carriers must comply with the rule immediately. The directive comes during a busy travel period in Turkey, with authorities aiming to protect passenger health and comfort.

The practice of serving bottled water rather than using aircraft tank water is common among airlines due to concerns about taste and quality. Water tanks on planes can accumulate minerals from different airports' supplies, leading to unpleasant flavors and potential maintenance challenges over time. Bottled water ensures consistency and reduces the risk of contamination.

According to Turkish Airlines, staying hydrated is especially important when flying, as low humidity inside cabins increases the risk of dehydration. Long-haul travelers are advised to drink at least two glasses of water during flights. Cabin air typically has much lower moisture content than normal indoor environments, causing faster fluid loss through skin and lungs. This can lead to headaches, decreased concentration, and other health issues if not addressed by adequate fluid intake.

The Turkish government’s move is intended not only to meet basic passenger needs but also to align with international standards for airline service. The regulation is expected to enhance overall customer satisfaction and support Turkey’s image as an international aviation destination.

Passengers may request their complimentary water at any time during the flight except when the seatbelt sign is on or during takeoff and landing. While most major airlines already provide free water as part of their service offerings, this new mandate formalizes the requirement for all carriers operating within or from Turkey.

Turkish Airlines already has policies in place ensuring food and water are provided within two hours in case of delays after departure or upon arrival if a flight remains on the apron.

The impact of this regulation on global aviation practices remains uncertain as it is yet unclear whether other civil aviation authorities will introduce similar mandates.
