More than 3,000 Boeing Defense workers in St. Louis, St. Charles, and Mascoutah have been on strike for six weeks after contract negotiations stalled. The employees are represented by the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) District 837. The union has rejected several proposals from Boeing, including a recent five-year contract that was voted down last week.

Union president Tom Boelling called the talks with Boeing “a waste of time.” Following the rejection of Boeing’s latest offer, IAM District 837 has introduced its own four-year contract proposal for members to vote on Friday, September 19. Last week’s rejected five-year deal included a $4,000 ratification bonus and a 24% wage increase over the term of the contract. An earlier four-year proposal offered a $5,000 incentive and a 20% raise. Boeing stated that its most recent package would have raised pay by an average of 45%.

The union’s new proposal includes a larger ratification bonus, better retirement contributions, and higher wage increases for top-scale employees. Dan Gillian, Vice President of Boeing Defense, responded: “This publicity stunt is a waste of time that will not help the parties reach a deal. The union continues to create false expectations by voting on an offer we never made, including terms we’ve expressly told them we won’t accept.”

Voting will take place at St. Louis Music Park from 8:00 to 11:00 on Friday, with results expected immediately after polls close. IAM Midwest Territory General Vice President Sam Cicinelli said, “Boeing needs to recognize that this workforce is the backbone of its defense operations, and the community is standing with these families until they achieve a fair contract.”

If union members approve their proposal, it will be submitted to Boeing as a pre-ratified agreement subject to company acceptance. If rejected by Boeing or if no agreement is reached, the strike will continue. The company has indicated that its last five-year offer was its “last, best and final offer.”

The ongoing strike has affected production rates for key defense products such as the F-15EX and F/A-18 Super Hornet fighter jets, T-7A Red Hawk trainer aircraft, and MQ-25 Stingray unmanned refuelers. While deliveries and flight tests have continued during the walkout period, production has slowed.

To address staffing shortages caused by the strike, Boeing has started hiring permanent replacement workers at its St. Louis defense facilities through job postings and job fairs held both in-person and virtually on September 16. The company did not specify how many positions it plans to fill but emphasized maintaining adequate staffing levels for critical defense programs as justification for these actions.

Union leaders criticized Boeing’s approach to negotiations and warned that striking machinists might not be able to return to their original jobs if permanent replacements are hired.
