Deutsche Aircraft is reviving the Dornier 328 turboprop with a new model, the D328eco, aiming to blend traditional design with modern technology and sustainability. The original Dornier 328, first flown in 1991 and introduced in 1993, was known for its short takeoff and landing capabilities, high cruising speed, and passenger comfort. About 150 of these aircraft are still operating worldwide.

The D328eco is being built at Oberpfaffenhofen near Munich and led by Chief Engineer Thomas Ahn, who was part of the original development team. The company emphasizes that this program goes beyond producing an aircraft; it seeks to reestablish Germany’s full aircraft-manufacturing capability by combining craftsmanship with advanced digital design tools and a focus on environmental responsibility.

Deutsche Aircraft has acquired the type certificate rights for the Dornier 328 and continues to support existing operators globally. The company highlights that more than 150 D328s remain in service across various roles such as passenger transport, cargo, search and rescue, air ambulance, firefighting, and special missions. Their workforce includes over 550 aviation experts from 40 nationalities.

According to Deutsche Aircraft’s stated mission: “Developing the most advanced, energy-efficient, and cost‑effective 40‑seater regional turboprop: the D328eco.” They add that their values include “Sustainability; Collaboration; Openness; Respect; Excellence (rooted in German engineering/design quality).”

The new D328eco features a stretched fuselage—about two meters longer than its predecessor—to accommodate up to 40 passengers. It will use Pratt & Whitney Canada PW127XT-S engines designed for improved fuel efficiency and lower emissions. The aircraft can operate on 100% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), which could reduce CO₂ emissions by up to 95% compared to conventional fuels.

In terms of performance, the D328eco maintains short-field capabilities similar to the original but offers enhanced range, payload capacity, and operational flexibility. It is engineered for unpaved runway operations and steep approaches suitable for remote or constrained airports. Its cruise speed is approximately 324 knots with a service ceiling of 30,000 feet.

A comparison between old and new models shows that while the original carried about 30–33 passengers at a maximum takeoff weight of nearly 14 metric tons, the D328eco increases capacity to 40 seats with a higher maximum takeoff weight of over 15 metric tons. Fuel consumption at cruise drops significantly in the new version—around 480 kg/h—resulting in lower operating costs.

The manufacturer also introduces a multi-role variant called D328MR (Multi-Role), which can be adapted for medical evacuation, surveillance missions, cargo transport or VIP shuttle duties. This model supports rapid cabin reconfiguration and can fly nearly 2,200 nautical miles in medevac configuration or remain airborne for over eight hours during surveillance tasks.

Although no firm orders have been announced yet and entry into service has been delayed until late 2027, Deutsche Aircraft positions the D328eco as a future-oriented solution for regional aviation needs.
