Vietjet receives first delayed Boeing 737 MAX after six-year wait

Vietjet is set to receive its first Boeing 737 MAX aircraft this Sunday, nearly a decade after placing its initial order. The formal handover will occur at Boeing Field, with Vietnam’s President Luong Cuong expected to attend as part of his visit to the United States for the 80th session of the UN General Assembly.

The Vietnamese low-cost airline signed an agreement in 2016 to purchase 100 Boeing 737 MAX planes, with original deliveries scheduled for 2019. However, delays were caused by the global grounding of the MAX following two fatal crashes in late 2018 and early 2019, complications from the COVID-19 pandemic, and more recently, tariffs imposed by the US government on Vietnam that created financing challenges.

This delivery marks Vietjet's first addition of a Boeing aircraft to its previously all-Airbus fleet. The carrier has committed to receiving a total of 100 high-density Boeing 737 MAX 8200 models—an expanded version of the MAX 8—as well as orders for both standard MAX 8s and stretched MAX 10s. According to Reuters, another aircraft is likely scheduled for delivery in October.

Boeing has maintained business relations with Vietnam since a deal for Boeing 767-300ERs was signed in 1995. While Airbus currently dominates airline fleets in Vietnam, recent developments show change: Vietnam Airlines recently finalized an order for fifty Boeing 737 MAX jets.

After initially announcing its major order with Boeing in May 2016 and adding another hundred planes at the Farnborough Air Show in July 2018—with expectations that deliveries would be completed between 2019 and 2023—the actual process stalled due to industry setbacks. In addition to safety concerns surrounding the aircraft model and pandemic disruptions, new tariffs imposed by then-US President Donald Trump earlier this year further delayed progress.

With these obstacles now resolved, Vietjet's investments related to US aerospace are projected to reach $65 billion when including purchases from GE Aerospace, Honeywell, Pratt & Whitney alongside its Boeing acquisitions. The company also secured over $4 billion in financing deals with American institutions earlier this year aimed at supporting its fleet renewal plans.

Vietjet continues expanding aggressively; it currently has around four hundred outstanding orders split between Airbus and Boeing. These include up to one hundred fifty Airbus A321neos on order and plans for forty new A330neo widebodies—alongside two hundred narrowbody Max jets from Boeing—and an additional deal pending for twenty Dreamliners.

Earlier this year, Vietjet announced it would transfer fifty of its ordered Max jets to Thai Vietjet Air and could supply more aircraft through joint ventures such as Vietjet Qazaqstan with Qazag Air. As of now, Vietjet operates ninety-nine aircraft across several types—including leased COMAC ARJ21 regional jets introduced into service this April.

The airline anticipates rapid growth over coming years; under current schedules it expects three hundred new additions between now and late-2027—a move that will further cement its status as a key player within Southeast Asia’s aviation sector. Last year saw record revenue figures as passenger numbers continued rising sharply.
