Delta Air Lines plans to introduce a new configuration for its Airbus A321neo aircraft, which have been grounded due to regulatory delays. Some of these jets, delivered without seats and intended for premium long-haul service, have remained unused in storage while awaiting certification for their new business-class seating.

In response, Delta will temporarily equip up to seven of these planes with 44 first-class recliner seats—more than double the typical number on its domestic A321neos. The new layout will also include 54 Comfort+ extra-legroom seats and 66 standard economy seats.

A Delta spokesperson stated, "Delta continually explores new ways to make the most of our fleet to better serve our customers and support our business. Select A321neo aircraft are expected to begin their entrance into service next year with an updated seat configuration designed with comfort in mind. We look forward to sharing more in 2026."

The airline has not specified which routes these reconfigured planes will serve or how it will manage in-flight service for such a large first-class cabin, given possible galley space limitations. The current plan is to operate this setup until the original lie-flat business-class pods receive regulatory approval.

Delta's A321neo fleet currently numbers over 75 aircraft, all configured with 20 first-class seats, 60 Comfort+ seats, and 114 economy seats since their introduction in 2022. The temporary subfleet will use the same type of seats as existing domestic configurations.

More details about future deployments and services are expected from Delta as the timeline for certifying the new business-class product becomes clearer.
