Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) has announced the recipients of its annual Fly Quieter Program awards, recognizing airlines operating at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) for efforts to reduce aircraft noise in surrounding communities.
The program, which began in January 2020, is designed to encourage airlines to minimize noise through operational practices and technology. Airlines are evaluated on several criteria, including measured aircraft noise levels in residential areas, the noise ratings of their fleets as certified by the Federal Aviation Administration, adherence to take-off procedures that limit early turns over neighborhoods, compliance with restrictions on nighttime engine run-ups, and avoidance of non-conforming easterly departures during overnight hours.
Airlines are grouped into three categories based on their average daily operations at LAX. In Category 1 (100 or more average daily operations), United Airlines received the Gold award, American Airlines was awarded Silver, and Southwest Airlines earned Bronze. For Category 2 (5-99 daily operations), Volaris took Gold, Frontier Airlines won Silver, and Spirit Airlines was recognized with Bronze. In Category 3 (four or fewer daily operations), Breeze Airways received Gold, ITA Airways was awarded Silver, and Fiji Airways earned Bronze.
