Two major taxiway projects at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) have been recognized with industry awards for their contributions to airfield safety, efficiency, and guest experience. The North Airfield Exit Taxiways (NAET) and the Taxiway D Westerly Extension were built concurrently over a two-year period. These projects improved aircraft circulation by adding parallel taxiways along the airport’s north runway complex and constructing four new exit taxiways from Runway 24R/6L.

The work required detailed planning and close coordination with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), airline partners, and other airport stakeholders. Construction was carried out in phases to minimize operational disruptions and reduce delays.

In May, the NAET project received the International Partnering Institute's "2025 Partnered Project of the Year" award. This recognition highlighted collaboration among project partners as well as LAWA’s focus on innovation and partnership in infrastructure delivery. Granite Construction Company was the general contractor for this project, while HNTB Corporation served as designer and engineer of record.

In April, the Taxiway D Westerly Extension received two awards from the Southwest Concrete Pavement Association: "Overcoming Challenges" and "Delivering Ahead of Schedule." LAWA worked with Sully-Miller Company as general contractor on this project; RS&H, Inc. provided design and engineering services.

Both projects together secured more than $99 million in grants from the FAA’s Airport Improvement Program. Contractors also surpassed Disadvantaged Business Entity (DBE) goals, awarding over $36 million of construction costs to DBE firms.

Michael Christensen, Chief Airport Development Officer at Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA), said: "The North Airfield Exit Taxiways and Taxiway D Westerly Extension projects are industry-leading examples of what's possible when you have great teams committed to airfield safety and efficiency while remaining conscientious of the guest experience from the curb to the runway. We thank our contracting partners for their work and join them in celebration of these well-earned awards as we continue to build world-class airport facilities that let incredible experiences take flight."
