Wizz Air has been named 'Sustainable Airline of the Year 2025' at the annual Sustainability Awards presented by Airline Economics. The recognition highlights the airline's transparent reporting and investment in fuel-efficient aircraft, as well as its operational approach to environmental strategy.

The award was presented during the Growth Frontiers London event at the Natural History Museum on September 17, 2025. Judges cited Wizz Air’s commitment to maintaining industry-leading reporting standards and its investment in a highly fuel-efficient fleet.

Dorottya Durucsko, Head of Government Affairs and Sustainability at Wizz Air, commented: "Recognition from Airline Economics and Estuaire strengthens our belief that we are on the right path of strengthening ecosystem of aviation. Let’s WIZZ."

Wizz Air reported an emissions intensity of 52.2 grams per passenger-kilometer for the full year 2025. The company aims to cut carbon intensity by 25% by 2030 and plans for Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) to power 10% of its flights by that year. Its sustainability strategy is structured around three pillars: flights, fuel, and footprint, with a target to reduce emissions by 30% through fleet renewal alone.

The airline’s focus on sustainability is seen as beneficial not only for environmental goals but also for financial performance and reputation among corporate travelers who prioritize ESG criteria. For investors and lessors, Wizz Air’s efforts suggest that low-cost carriers can lower per-passenger carbon emissions while potentially improving access to capital and favorable lease terms.

Internally, this recognition supports employee engagement with Wizz Air's Net Zero plan but also increases scrutiny regarding emissions data accuracy, SAF sourcing practices, and timely fleet upgrades.

While airlines like Wizz Air are making progress toward reducing their carbon footprint, industry experts note that full decarbonization remains a long-term goal due to technological limitations such as hydrogen-powered aircraft still being far off.
