Korean Air has announced a partnership with Swedish flight tracking company Wingbits to support research in sustainable air travel, autonomous aviation, and Advanced Air Mobility (AAM). The collaboration will allow Korean Air’s R&D Center to access real-time flight-tracking data across three continents.

The agreement enables the integration of Wingbits’ incentive-based network into Korean Air’s research activities. This network tracks 150,000 daily flights through more than 4,500 contributors worldwide. The airline aims to use this data to enhance operational efficiency and advance its work on ACROSS (Air Control and Routing Orchestrated Skyway System), an in-house platform for integrated air traffic control and routing coordination.

Korean Air’s R&D center will utilize the real-time ADS-B data provided by Wingbits for airspace integration research focused on Advanced Air Mobility. The data covers the Incheon Flight Information Region as well as parts of North America and Europe. This information is expected to contribute to urban air mobility technologies and unmanned aircraft development.

Wingbits’ system rewards contributors who transmit encrypted ADS-B data using specialized hardware designed for accuracy and security. The company was founded in 2023 in Stockholm and achieved 80% global coverage within its first year of operation. Its expansion continues across multiple regions including Asia-Pacific, North America, Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.

KwangOh Moon, Principal Researcher for AAM at Korean Air’s R&D Center, said: “Precise, secure, real-time data is foundational to our work. We chose to cooperate with Wingibits to integrate their data network into our R&D activities, specifically to enhance the global capabilities of our ACROSS platform. This collaboration will help us produce world-class outcomes in airspace integration research, and we look forward to our mutual success.”

Korean Air operates from its hub at Incheon International Airport with over 700 weekly flights serving more than 90 destinations globally. Its fleet consists of 165 aircraft from both Airbus and Boeing families. The airline recently placed a record order with Boeing as part of its plans for fleet growth.

The R&D Center forms part of Korean Air's Aerospace division which works on projects such as unmanned aerial vehicles, satellite structure design, military aircraft development, and maintenance operations. Recent partnerships include working with Boeing on predictive maintenance solutions aimed at increasing aircraft availability.

In terms of advanced mobility initiatives, Korean Air focuses on developing systems that support next-generation platforms like electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. Its ACROSS solution integrates command-and-control functions for low-altitude operations while enabling scalable monitoring for future urban air mobility services.
