According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), air traffic controllers handle more than 45,000 flights and guide over 2.9 million passengers across the United States each day. This critical workforce is central to maintaining the safety and efficiency of the national airspace system. Airlines for America has emphasized that ensuring full staffing levels is essential to reducing delays and safeguarding the traveling public.
The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) reported that recent initiatives—such as accelerated hiring processes and financial incentives—helped meet controller staffing targets in 2023. These measures were designed to offset retirements and respond to rising demand for air travel, which has placed pressure on the air traffic control system.
