FedEx has announced an expansion of its Operations Center in Costa Rica, coinciding with the 25th anniversary of its presence in the country. The facility, which opened in 2022, has increased its size by 26% and now covers over 12,600 square meters. It occupies more than half of the El Quijote Logistics Park in Belén de Heredia.

The expansion includes new last-mile ground operations (Shipping Center), complementing existing export and import processes. FedEx has also added two temperature-controlled cold rooms certified by IATA’s CEIV for handling pharmaceutical cargo, as well as two additional cold rooms for non-pharmaceutical imports. An area dedicated to special logistics services (SEL) has also been established.

“This year marks the 25th anniversary of the start of our operations in Costa Rica. This new investment means greater capacity and operational efficiency to meet growing demand and strengthen the competitiveness of Costa Rican companies internationally,” said Basil Khalil, vice president of operations for FedEx in the Caribbean and Central America. “By investing in infrastructure and service improvements, we enable faster, more flexible, and efficient cross-border trade.”

In the second quarter of 2025, air transport in Costa Rica handled more than $2.9 billion worth of goods, accounting for about 45% of total exports according to data from the National Institute of Statistics and Census (INEC) (https://admin.inec.cr/sites/default/files/2025-08/ComercioExterior_ResultadosPreliminares_II-TRIM-2025.pdf) and the Costa Rican Foreign Trade Promotion Agency (PROCOMER) (https://servicios.procomer.go.cr/PortalEstadistico/).

Air transport's share has grown steadily over recent years; it represented just 31% of exports five years ago (https://admin.inec.cr/sites/default/files/media/recomex2020_2.pdf). The increase highlights air shipping’s growing role for industries such as medical devices, pharmaceuticals, and electronics.

Medical device exports have expanded more than thirtyfold over a quarter-century to become Costa Rica’s leading export product. In recent years, medicines have reached over fifty destination markets according to PROCOMER statistics (https://servicios.procomer.go.cr/PortalEstadistico/). Air freight is most commonly used by companies operating under Free Zone status—where most multinational MedTech firms are located—according to reports from CINDE (https://www.cinde.org/es/noticias/costa-rica-es-considerado-el-principal-destino-emergente-para-empresas-de-ciencias-de-la-vida-en-latinoamerica).

Sensitive shipments such as pharmaceuticals, medical devices, and electronic components require reliable logistics services. FedEx serves these sectors with twenty-two domestic ground routes in Costa Rica along with a daily direct flight from Monday through Friday connecting to its Memphis hub using a Boeing 767 aircraft.
