FedEx has expanded its Operations Center in Costa Rica, marking the 25th anniversary of its presence in the country. The center, located in El Quijote Logistics Park in Belén de Heredia and inaugurated in 2022, now covers 12,600 square meters, representing a 26% increase and occupying more than half of the logistics park.

The expansion includes new last-mile ground operations to support existing import and export activities. FedEx has also added two temperature-controlled cold rooms certified under IATA’s CEIV program for pharmaceutical cargo, as well as two additional cold rooms for non-pharmaceutical products. A dedicated area for Special Logistics Services (SEL) has also been introduced.

“This year marks the 25th anniversary of FedEx operations in Costa Rica. This new investment drives greater capacity and operational efficiency to meet the growing market demand and help strengthen the competitiveness of Costa Rican businesses on the global stage,” said Basil Khalil, vice president of operations for FedEx Caribbean and Central America. “By investing in infrastructure and service enhancements, we’re enabling faster, more flexible, and more efficient cross-border trade.”

According to data from the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INEC) and the Costa Rican Foreign Trade Promotion Agency (PROCOMER), air transportation moved over $2.9 billion worth of goods in Costa Rica during the second quarter of 2025, accounting for 45% of total exports (https://admin.inec.cr/sites/default/files/2025-08/ComercioExterior_ResultadosPreliminares_II-TRIM-2025.pdf;https://servicios.procomer.go.cr/PortalEstadistico/). This share has increased from 31% in 2020 (https://admin.inec.cr/sites/default/files/media/recomex2020_2.pdf), highlighting air transport's growing role in key sectors such as healthcare and electronics.

Over the past quarter-century, medical device exports have grown significantly, making them Costa Rica’s top export product. In recent years, medicines have been exported to over 50 markets worldwide according to PROCOMER data. Air transport is commonly used by companies operating under the Free Trade Zone regime—where most of Costa Rica’s approximately 90 multinational medical technology firms are based—according to information from CINDE (https://www.cinde.org/en/essential-news/costa-rica-named-leading-emerging-destination-for-life-sciences-companies-in-latin-america).

FedEx supports these industries with 22 ground routes within Costa Rica and a daily international flight connecting directly to its Memphis hub using a Boeing 767 aircraft.
