Mathias Bolton Head of Commerce | UNI Global Union

A recent survey conducted by ver.di, a union affiliated with UNI Global Union, reveals significant challenges faced by retail workers in Germany. The survey gathered responses from 11,732 employees and highlights low wages, heavy workloads, and the negative impact of digital tools as key factors driving staff out of the sector.

Silke Zimmer, Head of Commerce at ver.di, said: "Our survey results are devastating and show that changes are urgently needed if the retail sector wants to retain and attract staff. Digitalization is primarily used in retail as a control tool… Instead of relieving the burden on employees, digital processes place additional strain on them."

The findings suggest that better working conditions are necessary for retaining employees in a sector vital to daily life in Germany. Zimmer emphasized: "Retail needs managers who stand up for their employees and support them… Good work is not a luxury, but a right of employees to be able to stay in their jobs long-term. That’s what we’re fighting for."

Mathias Bolton, Head of UNI Commerce, commented on the broader implications: "ver.di’s survey paints a grim picture of what’s it’s really like to be a retail worker, and reflects the lives of millions of retail workers the world over. The more we organize, the more power we have to stand up against multinational retail operators that never cease to squeeze every last drop from workers. We support ver.di in their fight for jobs with dignity."
