Dave Davis, Spirit’s President and Chief Executive Officer | Spirit Airlines

Spirit Airlines will end service at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport and Hartford's Bradley International Airport on October 31, as part of efforts to reduce costs and streamline operations amid ongoing financial challenges. The company announced the decision in a staff memo Friday.

Beginning in November, Spirit will also suspend about 40 routes, representing roughly a quarter of its network. These measures follow the airline’s second chapter 11 bankruptcy filing in less than a year and are aimed at addressing urgent cost concerns.

"While we previously reduced our presence at these airports, these decisions were still difficult, and we are incredibly grateful for our team members and partners at both stations," Spirit Chief Commercial Officer Rana Ghosh wrote to employees Friday.

Currently, Spirit operates nonstop flights from Hartford to Detroit, Myrtle Beach, Nashville, and Fort Lauderdale. Its Minneapolis-St. Paul schedule is smaller, with flights to Detroit and Atlanta.

The airline has not yet provided a complete list of routes that will be suspended in November. Earlier this fall, Spirit had already eliminated nearly a dozen flights before indicating that more reductions were likely. Reports indicate that the carrier recently announced plans to furlough about one-third of its flight attendants.

Despite these cutbacks, Ghosh told employees Friday that there are no immediate plans to exit additional airports.

Spirit’s total number of flights for the fourth quarter of 2025 is projected to be down by over 20% compared to last year, based on data from aviation analytics firm Cirium.

Competitors have responded by expanding their own schedules. United Airlines and Frontier Airlines have both added new routes this month that overlap with those currently served by Spirit. JetBlue has also increased its presence at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport due to newly available gate space after Spirit's reductions.

In the memo to staff, executives said the changes are "necessary" for positioning the airline for future stability.
