Airbus, one of the world's leading commercial aircraft manufacturers, is preparing to increase production of its A320 family jets in the United States. The company will open a second final assembly line (FAL) at its facility in Mobile, Alabama, starting operations in October 2025. This move is aimed at meeting rising global demand for single-aisle aircraft, especially in North America.

The expansion is expected to double the plant's capacity for assembling A320 family aircraft. Airbus plans to deliver 75 A320-family aircraft per month by 2027 and estimates that about 1,000 new jobs will be created in the Mobile area as a result of this growth. Most of these positions will be skilled manufacturing roles.

The additional assembly line will add over a million square feet of production space and supporting structures at the Brookley Aeroplex site. Distributing final assembly across more locations helps Airbus absorb disruptions and strengthens local supply chains in the US, which could reduce both shipping time and costs for large components.

Airbus first opened its Mobile facility for A320 assembly in 2015. The site now also includes an engineering center and handles production for both the A220-100 and A220-300 models. Since its inception, employment at the site has grown from several hundred workers to more than 2,000 by the mid-2020s.

Increasing US-based production allows Airbus to serve American customers more quickly with locally assembled aircraft while diversifying its manufacturing footprint beyond Europe—where primary lines are located in Toulouse and Hamburg—to mitigate risks from supply chain issues or geopolitical uncertainties.

The Airbus A320 family remains one of the most widely used narrowbody jet series worldwide since entering service with Air France in April 1988. Over 12,000 units have been delivered globally. In addition to major European carriers such as Lufthansa and British Airways operating significant fleets of these jets, American Airlines is currently the largest US operator of the type, followed by JetBlue and Spirit Airlines.
