United Airlines currently operates the Boeing 787-10 rather than the Airbus A350-1000 because its order for the A350 has not yet been fulfilled. The airline inherited a significant order for Boeing 787s from Continental Airlines when the two companies merged in 2010, and these aircraft have since become central to United's widebody fleet.

Continental Airlines placed a major order for the 787 in 2004 and became the first American airline to order the 787-9 in 2007. The company cited fuel efficiency and operational flexibility as key reasons for choosing the Dreamliner. After merging with United, the combined carrier honored orders for both the 787-9 and smaller 787-8 models. Glenn Tilton, who would later serve as non-executive chairman of United Airlines, stated at the time: "Today is a great day for our customers, our employees, our shareholders, and our communities as we bring together our two companies in a merger of equals to create a world-class and truly global airline with an unparalleled network serving communities worldwide with outstanding customer service."

United’s first revenue flight on a 787 took place two years after the merger from Houston George Bush Intercontinental Airport. Over ten years, that aircraft logged nearly 40,000 flight hours.

The airline has played a leading role in operating all three variants of the Dreamliner—becoming the first North American carrier to fly the 787-10 in 2018 and also being the first globally to operate all three types: -8, -9, and -10. Gerry Laderman, United's chief financial officer, commented: "The 787-10 is an excellent addition to United's fleet. It offers superior fuel efficiency while providing a more comfortable customer experience onboard that allows passengers to arrive at their destinations feeling more refreshed." Ihssane Mounir of Boeing added: "We are honored that United, a leading global carrier, has placed its trust in the 787 family, carefully optimizing its network with all three Dreamliner models."

According to ch-aviation data reported by Simple Flying, United now operates a fleet of 79 Boeing 787s—including 21 of the -10 variant—with further orders pending delivery. Cirium data shows that these aircraft are primarily used on transatlantic routes connecting US hubs such as Newark Liberty International Airport and Chicago O’Hare International Airport with European cities like Frankfurt and Athens.

Currently, United does not operate any Airbus widebody jets but does have substantial orders for narrowbody Airbus aircraft such as A319s, A320s, A321neos, and A321XLRs. The situation will change when deliveries begin on its order for Airbus A350-900s—an order initially placed in 2010 but deferred until at least 2030.

United CEO Jeff Smisek previously said about introducing new widebodies: "This is a modern, fuel-efficient, and advanced-technology aircraft that our customers and co-workers will enjoy flying. It will be a great addition to our fleet, and will allow us to meet demand on larger, long-haul markets in our world-leading network."

Comparisons between Boeing’s Dreamliner series and Airbus’s A350 show differences in range and capacity; however, airlines consider multiple factors beyond performance statistics when making fleet decisions.

Other US carriers have made different choices regarding widebody fleets. Delta Air Lines canceled its inherited Dreamliner order after merging with Northwest Airlines and has focused instead on acquiring Airbus A350s and A330s since then. Industry observers note this reflects broader trends among US legacy carriers amid challenges faced by Boeing over recent years.

As deliveries progress over this decade—including additional Dreamliners already ordered—the composition of United’s long-haul fleet is expected to shift significantly.
