Virgin Australia has introduced a new seating option called 'Neighbour-Free Seating', allowing passengers to bid for an empty adjacent seat on selected routes. This move follows a travel survey that showed significant interest among Australian travelers in paying extra for more space during flights.

According to the airline, 42% of surveyed Australian passengers said they would consider paying to keep the middle seat free on international flights longer than three hours. For domestic flights over three hours, 35% expressed willingness to pay for the additional space.

Passengers can now submit bids starting at AU$30 (about $19.70) to secure an empty seat next to them. Virgin Australia will confirm successful bids no later than two hours before departure. Libby Minogue, Chief Marketing Officer of Virgin Australia, stated: "Our priority is to give Virgin Australia guests even more value and choice when they choose to fly with us. Neighbour-Free Seating is a clever add-on for Economy travellers who want the certainty of extra space without the price tag."

The bidding system is initially available on eight routes, covering both domestic and international destinations. Four routes depart from Melbourne Airport, heading to Adelaide, Bali, Perth, and Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport. Brisbane Airport offers this option on flights to Cairns and Sydney domestically, as well as internationally from Brisbane to Samoa. The final route connects Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport with Perth.

Libby Minogue described the rollout as "a step forward in enhancing the onboard experience and a game changer for those who want more comfort and space during their flight." She also noted that guest feedback played a direct role in developing this initiative.

There are certain conditions attached: only bookings with one or two passengers are eligible for bidding; Economy X and Business Class seats are excluded; winning bidders do not receive extra baggage allowance; and frequent flyer members such as Velocity Gold or Platinum will not be affected if their seat assignments overlap with successful bids.

Virgin Australia recently became the first carrier in Australia to allow pets in cabins but clarified that its new seating offer does not extend beyond providing additional personal space and comfort.
