Passport applicants in the United States are being advised to renew their documents as soon as possible due to a potential government shutdown, which could impact processing times. The U.S. Department of State currently estimates that routine passport processing takes four to six weeks, while expedited service is available within two to three weeks for an additional $60 fee. These timeframes apply to both new passports and renewals.

Applicants should note that mailing times are not included in these estimates and may add several weeks to the total time required to receive a passport. Travelers are encouraged to renew their passports at least six months before planned international trips, as some countries require passports to be valid for six months beyond either the date of entry or departure.

For urgent travel needs, such as life-or-death emergencies or travel within two to three weeks, individuals can make in-person appointments at passport agencies or centers. The State Department advises those with urgent needs not to mail applications but instead apply in person at least 14 days ahead of departure for passports or 28 days ahead for visas. Appointment availability is not guaranteed even for those who qualify under these circumstances.

A spokesperson from the State Department stated via email, "By moving away from the traditional paper application process, we are embracing digital transformation to offer a more secure, efficient, and convenient passport renewal experience for Americans. Every applicant who applies for a U.S. passport must establish their identity, U.S. citizenship and entitlement to a passport. Protecting the personal information of our customers is among our highest priorities."

Since its full launch in September 2023, more than one million applications have been processed through the department’s Online Passport Renewal (OPR) system.

Online renewal is available for U.S. citizens age 25 and over; however, those traveling within six weeks are not eligible for this option.

Travelers are reminded that processing times could slow if there is a government shutdown and should submit their applications as early as possible—ideally six to nine months before expiration or planned travel dates. The State Department provides regular updates on current processing times on its website.
