Qantas has announced that its regional subsidiary, QantasLink, will close three staff bases in Canberra, Hobart, and Mildura as part of a restructuring plan. The changes are scheduled to take effect in 2026. According to the airline, this decision follows an extensive review of QantasLink operations and aims to improve efficiency and reduce disruptions by consolidating crews at major hubs such as Melbourne, Brisbane, and Sydney.

A spokesperson for Qantas stated: "Relocation support will be offered to those people who do not want to commute and would prefer to move closer to where they will be working from."

The closure is expected to affect around 70 pilots and cabin crew. These employees will receive support packages allowing them either to commute from their current locations or relocate closer to the new bases. The package includes confirmed flights, rostering support, accommodation if needed, and relocation assistance.

Qantas has clarified that there will be no reduction in flight capacity at Canberra, Hobart, or Mildura airports due to these base closures. The airline also stated that job losses are not anticipated because there are sufficient positions available at larger bases. It is common practice in the industry for staff members to travel between cities for work assignments.

The restructuring coincides with a fleet renewal program at QantasLink. The regional carrier is receiving new aircraft—including Airbus A220-300s and additional De Havilland Canada Dash 8-400s—to replace older models like the Fokker 100s and expand its network. National Jet Systems, another subsidiary within QantasLink, has begun operating new Airbus A220-300 aircraft on domestic routes and plans international services between Brisbane and Wellington.

The Transport Workers Union (TWU) has criticized the decision. Results from a union survey indicate that about two-thirds of affected workers may consider other employment if the closures proceed. The TWU argues that shutting these bases impacts both employees’ lives and local communities by forcing staff to choose between their families and their jobs.

Tasmanian MP Andrew Wilkie has also voiced concerns about the impact on smaller state capitals such as Hobart.

Currently, Qantas operates crew bases in several Australian cities; only Canberra, Hobart, and Mildura are affected by this change.
