Christy Hoffman General Secretary | UNI Global Union

UNI Global Union has expressed support for the Sumud Flotilla and called for the immediate release of its detained crew by Israeli authorities. The union, which represents service sector unions globally, said that the flotilla’s mission is to deliver food and medicine to Gaza.

The Sumud Flotilla consists of around 50 vessels and nearly 500 participants from multiple countries. According to UNI Global Union, the flotilla was intercepted by Israeli military forces after being targeted by drone strikes that caused damage to ships and injuries among crew members.

“This flotilla is bringing more than aid to the people of Gaza; it is bringing hope and solidarity. Knowing that they were likely to be intercepted, they kept going and promise that more will follow. Because humanity stands with the Palestinians,” said UNI Global Union General Secretary Christy Hoffman.

“The crew of the Sumud, like the Madleen and Handala before it, is engaged in peaceful, principled protest against an unjust blockade. They are taking direct action while governments and international institutions remain paralyzed in stopping mass death and destruction. Their bravery is a stark reminder that silence in the face of starvation and collective punishment makes the world complicit.”

UNI Global Union supports calls from the European Trade Union Confederation for EU sanctions against Israel, including suspension of agreements between Israel and the EU due to alleged violations.

The organization also reiterated its demand for an immediate ceasefire, release of hostages, a just peace under UN Security Resolutions, and an end to occupation.

At present, not all vessels have been seized by Israeli forces; some continue toward Gaza. Updates on their location can be tracked at https://globalsumudflotilla.org/tracker/#help.
