An Airbus A380 that previously flew for Malaysia Airlines has been relocated from France to the United Arab Emirates after nearly three years in storage. The aircraft, formerly registered as 9M-MNF and now designated 2-JAYN, was ferried from Tarbes-Lourdes-Pyrénées Airport in southwestern France to Abu Dhabi International Airport.

The A380 had been one of six operated by Malaysia Airlines between 2012 and 2022. After its retirement, which was hastened by the onset of the coronavirus pandemic, it spent more than two years stored at Kuala Lumpur International Airport before being moved to Tarbes in December 2022. All six aircraft were placed in storage following Malaysia Airlines’ decision to replace them with smaller Airbus models such as the A330neo and A350.

Since arriving in France, the aircraft has changed ownership and registration several times, most recently belonging to Airbus Financial Services under registrations EI-HKF and then 2-JAYN. The reasons for its recent move to Abu Dhabi remain unclear.

Recent data from Flightradar24 indicated increased activity around the jet, including a test flight on September 26 that lasted almost three hours. On October 1, the aircraft completed a six-hour-and-35-minute ferry flight from Tarbes to Abu Dhabi, landing at 17:03 local time.

Upon arrival in Abu Dhabi, reports indicate that "upon landing, the aircraft taxied to the Etihad Engineering area of the airport." This facility is where Etihad Airways maintains its fleet of Airbus A380s. According to Flightradar24, this suggests that maintenance work may be planned for the jet. It remains uncertain whether Etihad intends to add this plane to its own fleet or if it will be serviced for another customer under contract with Airbus.

Speculation continues about the future use of this particular A380. AeroTELEGRAPH noted that while some believe it could serve as a source of spare parts or join another airline’s fleet, an acquisition by a private customer cannot be ruled out.

Simple Flying has reached out to Airbus for further information regarding 2-JAYN's relocation but no official statement has yet been received.
