Captain Chris Pohl | Simple Flying

Captain Chris, an experienced international airline captain, will be writing a regular column for Simple Flying. He has been a follower of the publication since the pandemic and has participated in their podcasts and met team members at airshows.

Chris’s interest in aviation began during his childhood in Melbourne, Australia. At age 12, he took his first flight on a Trans-Australian Airways Boeing 727. During this trip, he was invited into the cockpit for takeoff. After witnessing the experience firsthand, Chris asked if he could become a pilot. The captain replied, “Yes, of course you can.” Chris credits this moment as shaping his entire life.

He worked various jobs to pay for flying lessons and became a commercial pilot in 1982. To gain enough experience for Australia’s airlines, he flew as an instructor, charter pilot, and performed other flying jobs before being hired by Ansett as a first officer on the Fokker F-27 and later becoming one of their first Airbus A320 pilots. However, following an industrial dispute that led to mass resignations from Ansett and TAA in 1989, Chris moved overseas.

After converting his license in the UK and working briefly with several European airlines—including Air Europe, KLM, Swissair, Eurocypria, and Air Lanka—Chris joined Virgin Atlantic after learning about their new Airbus A340s. He trained at Airbus’s Miami facility and has remained with Virgin Atlantic since then.

By age 30 in 1994, Chris became a captain on the Airbus A340-300 at Virgin Atlantic—a position that would have taken longer to achieve had he stayed with Qantas. Over more than four decades in aviation, he has accumulated over 27,000 flight hours on aircraft including the A330, A340, and A350-1000. He also serves as a training captain and examiner.

During the pandemic shutdowns affecting aviation worldwide, Chris started sharing content on Instagram under @captainchris to support airlines and inspire others interested in aviation. His account now has over half a million followers.

As part of his new role with Simple Flying, Captain Chris invites readers to suggest topics they are interested in—such as how to become a pilot or technical explanations of aircraft operations—and plans to share stories from his extensive career.
