Tokyo has a new addition to its luxury hotel offerings with the official opening of the JW Marriott Hotel Tokyo in Takanawa Gateway City. The property, located near Haneda Airport, is expected to appeal to Marriott Bonvoy members and travelers seeking both convenience and upscale amenities.

Chris Clark, general manager of the hotel, said in an interview with The Points Guy, "JW Marriott Hotel Tokyo is the very first JW Marriott in the capital region and serves as a flagship property in Japan." He added, "Among the many luxury hotels in Tokyo, we are uniquely positioned as the only luxury hotel within the redevelopment area of Takanawa Gateway City." Clark explained that the hotel's approach is rooted in "the philosophy of Zen" and aims to combine local cultural heritage with modern sophistication. "In the midst of this vibrant city, we provide a sanctuary where guests can experience tranquility and peace."

The new hotel features 200 rooms, including 30 suites. The interiors were designed by Yabu Pushelberg with a theme described as "from darkness to light." Among its wellness offerings is the brand’s first JW Mindful Floor. This includes nine dedicated Mindful rooms, Spa by JW, a pool on the 28th floor overlooking Tokyo Tower and Mount Fuji, and a fitness center.

Clark highlighted some features he believes will be especially popular: "There are so many parts of the hotel that I love and know the guests will, too. However, if I had to pick one, I would say the swimming pool. It is situated on the 28th floor adjacent to our spa and has exceptional views of Tokyo Tower, overlooking Takanawa and some of the temples and shrines in the area, as well as Mount Fuji in the distance," he said. "It is a 25-meter lap pool, and while swimming, these views are truly inspirational and uplifting."

Dining options at JW Marriott Hotel Tokyo include seven bars and restaurants offering diverse cuisine. Notable among them is Saki restaurant: "Saki is an avant-garde kappo omakase restaurant overseen by two two-Michelin-starred chefs," Clark said. "It offers bold yet delicate dishes crafted with seasonal ingredients, inviting guests to discover new worlds of flavor and unexpected delights." His personal recommendation from Saki's menu is Ise ebi (Japanese spiny lobster), which he describes as having “sweet, rich flavor and firm texture.”

Clark also discussed Takanawa’s history as an important gateway during ancient times when Tokyo was known as Edo. Today it remains quieter than central districts but provides strong transport links across Tokyo. He noted that for those interested in transportation infrastructure or planespotting: "Due to our location in Takanawa, and not a lot of high buildings around us on the bay-view side, you can watch ships, airplanes, shinkansen [bullet trains], and cars all at once... It's a dynamic yet calming scene where time seems to slow down."

The general manager emphasized how Japanese hospitality complements JW Marriott’s values: "Japanese hospitality or omotenashi is defined by a spirit of anticipating guest's needs before they are even expressed... This aligns beautifully with JW Marriott's philosophy of mindfulness and heartfelt care," he said.

Room rates at JW Marriott Hotel Tokyo start around $580 per night or from 90,800 Marriott Bonvoy points over upcoming months.
