The UNI Post & Logistics World Conference concluded in Bangkok with the election of new leadership and the adoption of a strategic plan aimed at addressing major challenges in the sector, including digitalization, privatization, climate change, and e-commerce.

Jan Simpson, National President of CUPW-STTP (Canada), was elected as the UNI Post & Logistics World President. She succeeds Dave Ward, General Secretary of CWU (UK). In her remarks to affiliates following her nomination, Simpson stated: “I’ve been a postal worker my entire adult life, and like so many of you, I know the realities of the work floor. Those experiences have shaped my commitment to fairness, equality, and justice for all postal and logistics workers. Over the years, I have had the privilege of serving our members in Canada, and UNI Americas, and now I am ready to bring that same commitment, energy and experience to a bigger stage.”

Jens Saverstam from SEKO in Sweden was elected Deputy World President. He told participants: “I have worked in the post for 40 years in post – my first job was delivering Christmas cards. I’m proud to be a postal worker, and this something many postal workers feel. We should be proud and must bring this pride to our work.”

The conference addressed key issues such as diversification within postal networks, maintaining resilient public infrastructures through services expansion and green jobs, as well as ongoing debates about Universal Service Obligation (USO) and privatization. Union leaders from different countries shared their experiences on how liberalization has impacted employment conditions by reducing jobs and wages while affecting service quality.

Logistics operations were another focus area on the final day. Participants discussed global agreements with companies such as DPD Geopost and DHL. They highlighted organizing efforts within logistics networks like DHL Africa Alliance. The discussions also covered both risks—such as automation’s impact on employment—and opportunities presented by digital technologies if managed with union involvement.

Key resolutions adopted included measures related to parcel weight limits, subcontracting practices, women’s representation in unions, and other elements of the new strategic direction.

A significant outcome was approval of the UNI Post & Logistics Strategic Plan 2025–2029. The plan advocates strengthening USO as a publicly funded guarantee for communication services—including parcels and digital offerings—while rejecting privatization initiatives. It emphasizes strong unions, collective bargaining processes, public ownership models for postal services sectors globally.

The strategy includes steps toward environmental sustainability through service diversification—such as elder care or financial access—and commits to supporting workers during transitions by providing reskilling opportunities tied to decent job standards. Additionally, it aims for responsible implementation of digital technology across supply chains while promoting fair regulation in expanding parcel markets.

At its foundation is an organizing call designed to build union power across all countries—particularly targeting large multinational firms like DHL or DPD Geopost—to ensure future developments in postal services benefit workers worldwide.
